Thynne McCarthy's 12 week Bush Boat Program

Thynne McCarthy’s 12-Week Bush Boats Program

Bringing Rowing to the Regions

The Bush Boats Program, proudly supported by Thynne McCarthy, is a 12-week initiative designed to bring the sport of rowing to regional and remote communities across Australia. By providing access to equipment, coaching, and community support, the program creates opportunities for people in the bush to experience the teamwork, fitness, and sense of purpose that rowing offers.

What It Is

This isn’t just about putting boats on water — it’s about building capability in regional towns. Over 12 weeks, participants will be introduced to rowing fundamentals through local sessions using a travelling fleet of donated rowing shells (our “Bush Boats”), guided by experienced volunteers and coaches.

The program is suitable for beginners of all ages and fitness levels, with a focus on fun, inclusion, and community connection. It culminates in a local regatta or shared event with neighbouring programs, celebrating progress and encouraging ongoing involvement.

What’s Included

  • Access to rowing boats and basic equipment

  • Structured weekly sessions for 12 weeks

  • Coaching and support from visiting rowers

  • Opportunity to participate in the Bentleys' Australian Outback rowing Regatta in Longreach & Barcladine

  • Connection to the wider Outback Rowing community

Why It Matters

The Bush Boats Program is about more than rowing. It’s about giving people a reason to show up. It’s about helping small towns come together. And it’s about showing that the sport we love can be a spark in places where opportunity can feel far away.

With the support of Thynne + McCarthy, we’re not just planting the seeds for new rowers — we’re helping rural communities build something lasting, active, and full of pride.

Where It’s Going

The Bush Boats have already visited towns like St George, Burke, and Barcaldine, with more locations coming soon. Want to bring the program to your region? Or be part of the coaching and support crew?
