Bush Kids Program 2-3 October 2025
Option to extend 4-5 October 2025 for the Bentleys’ Australian Outback Rowing Regatta.
Position Type: Volunteer
About the Program:
The Bush Kids Program gives children from regional and remote areas an introduction to rowing, both on land and on water. Participants come from local schools, home-schooling, distance education, and ICPA programs. For some, it’s their very first time in a boat; for others, it’s a chance to reconnect with a sport they love.
We’re looking for volunteer coaches who are enthusiastic, hands-on, and ready to make this experience safe, fun, and inspiring. This is about more than technique, it’s about helping kids discover confidence, teamwork, and the joy of rowing.
What You’ll Do:
- Deliver engaging, safe, and supportive rowing instruction for children of all experience levels.
- Get involved in all aspects of the program, including on-water sessions, land-based exercises, and equipment setup.
- Support transport logistics and overnight supervision during the 2-day program.
- Encourage participants, provide guidance, and help them build confidence in their rowing skills.
- Option: join the Bentleys Australian Outback Rowing Regatta. If you stay on, your regatta seat fee, boat, equipment, and accommodation for two additional nights in Longreach will be provided.
Essential Requirements:
- Current Level 1 Rowing Australia Coaching Certificate (or willingness to start online now: Rowing Australia Coaching)
- Blue Card (Working with Children Check) if over 18 (apply here)
- Passion for working with children and regional communities
- Willingness to travel to Barcaldine (via bus or private car) 30 September – 6 October 2025
- Readiness to get hands-on and join the kids in the boat.
Volunteer Benefits:
- Accommodation covered for 1 night in Roma, 3 nights in Barcaldine; meals are the responsibility of the individual
- Travel expenses covered by Outback Rowing Australia
- Optional 2-night additional stay in Longreach for regatta participation, with accommodation, boat, equipment, and regatta costs covered.
Desirable Attributes:
- Experience coaching children or novice rowers
- Ability to mentor, inspire, and create a positive team environment
Selection Criteria:
Please address the following in a short personal statement:
- Motivation: What motivates you to want to be a part of the Bush Kids Program? Why is this opportunity meaningful to you?
