What You Need to Know

One Club. Many Locations.

Outback Rowing Australia is a little different to most rowing clubs.

Most rowing clubs have one clubhouse and one stretch of water. We are one club with many locations. Outback Rowing brings rowing to communities across regional and outback Australia and, increasingly, across multiple states.

Regardless of which Outback town you row in, you are part of the one Outback Rowing Australia Club.

Do I need to become a member?

Yes. Everyone rowing with Outback Rowing Australia needs to be a current member.

Each year, you simply need to decide how much rowing you are likely to do and what type of rowing you intend to participate in.

Your membership is important because it registers you as a participant Rowing Australian and our registered state body and provides the appropriate insurance coverage for your level of participation.

It also means you are eligible to use Outback Rowing Australia boats and equipment.

Which membership should I choose?

Outback Rowing Australia has three membership options.

1. Three-Month Bush Town Membership

July–September rowing + one regatta

This membership is designed specifically for our Bush Town participants who:

• live outside a major capital city;

• only intend to row during the July–September Outback rowing season; and

• would like to participate in one regatta, the Outback Regatta.

If you're joining us for the Outback season, doing some training in your local town and then coming along to the Outback Regatta, this is probably the membership for you.

Please note that sponsorship or local program funding does not cover this membership fee. This is your individual cost to be registered as a rower within the Australian rowing network and appropriately covered for your participation.

2. Recreational Membership 

Choose a Recreational Membership if you intend to row throughout the year but you're rowing primarily for enjoyment, fitness, social participation or learning and don't intend to compete in regattas.

This is a good option if you want rowing to become part of your regular recreation without the competition component.

3. Competitive Membership

Choose a Competitive Membership if you intend to row throughout the year and would like to compete in sanctioned regattas.

This opens up opportunities well beyond Outback Rowing events.

As an Outback Rowing Australia member, you can look at regatta calendars through Rowing Queensland, Rowing NSW, Rowing SA and other State rowing associations and identify events you'd like to attend.

You don't have to live in Queensland or only compete in Queensland simply because Outback Rowing Australia is affiliated with Rowing Queensland.

The difference in cost between Recreational and Competitive membership largely reflects the different level of participation and associated insurance coverage.

Why is Outback Rowing affiliated with Rowing Queensland?

Every rowing club needs to affiliate with a recognised State rowing body.

Outback Rowing Australia operates across state borders, but at this stage the majority of our rowers are located in Queensland. For this reason, Outback Rowing Australia is affiliated with Rowing Queensland, which in turn is affiliated with Rowing Australia.

Where we affiliate isn't particularly important to you as an individual member. It is simply the administrative pathway that connects our Club and our members to the recognised Australian rowing framework.

It provides access to the governance, education, integrity, competition and insurance structures that allow us to operate as a recognised rowing club.

What does my membership provide?

Part of your Outback Rowing Australia membership is paid as a participant capitation fee to Rowing Queensland and Rowing Australia.

That contribution supports a number of important areas across our sport.

Insurance

Registered participants receive insurance coverage appropriate to their membership and participation category.

Coach and official education

Your membership supports coach and official accreditation, education programs and the development of the people who make it possible for us to safely coach, train and race.

Governance and compliance

Rowing Queensland and Rowing Australia provide the governance and administrative framework required for our sport and work with organisations including the Australian Sports Commission, Australian Olympic Committee, Paralympics Australia and Commonwealth Games Australia.

Sport integrity and participant protection

Our affiliation supports the requirements of Sport Integrity Australia, the National Sports Tribunal and other national integrity and participant protection frameworks.

Events and competition

The State and national rowing bodies provide the framework and infrastructure required to deliver recognised rowing events across Australia and across the different disciplines of our sport.

Development and innovation

Membership contributes to the continued development of rowing, including participation programs, technology, digital platforms, coastal rowing and initiatives designed to introduce rowing to new communities.

Why does this matter for Outback Rowing?

For Outback Rowing, affiliation and membership are particularly important.

We're taking rowing into communities that haven't traditionally had easy access to the sport. We want someone rowing in an Outback town to have access to the same recognised sport, insurance framework, coaching standards and opportunities as someone rowing at an established metropolitan club.

It also protects Outback Rowing Australia and the people who volunteer their time to make these programs possible.

So, even if you're only jumping in a boat for a few months each year, you still need to be a member before you row.
